Day 19 – So then…

January 25th – So then…

Today’s Scripture Reading: Romans 8:12-17

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” is in of itself such extraordinary good news that it could sustain our souls for eternity.  Throughout history and in the scripture one of the revealing things about the heart of our heavenly father is that ‘good enough’ just isn’t part of his character. He always goes beyond what our hearts and minds can think and understand.  So, while the exoneration of our sin’s penalty and verdict is enough to celebrate for the duration of our lives, the message of the Gospel goes deeper yet.

So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.  For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.  For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.  For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”  The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs–heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. – Romans 8:12-17

Not only does Christ grant us forgiveness, but He gives us freedom as well – Freedom from the power and grip of our sin.  No longer do we have to obey the taskmaster, our sin nature. No, we are free to live in the power of the Holy Spirit.  The Gospel provides the pathway for us to be “in Christ” (Romans 8:1).  It doesn’t end there though! We receive the Holy Spirit.  God is in us!  His power to overcome sin and death lives in me and in you.  If God had just offered forgiveness of sin – that would have been enough.  Yet, He has done so much more.  He has given us the gift of the Holy Spirit AND an inheritance as an adopted child of God.  Did you see the proclamation above? You and Jesus share the same inheritance.  Pause and think about what that means.  Your heavenly father has forgiven you of your sins, absorbed their penalty and in return adopted you as His child.

That’s extravagance personified.  Grace upon Grace.  Brilliant, Beautiful, and Bright is the Gospel.

How do you see yourself today?  Take a look at yourself through the truth of the scripture today.  You are God’s son or daughter.  You get to call the maker of the Universe Daddy.

Prayer Focus:  When you pray today remember that you are not talking to a distant uninterested divine power, but to Father who loves you and had adopted you.
