January 20th – Joy in Sorrow
Author: Kim Buchanan
Today’s Scripture Reading: Psalm 23
“Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD is the one who goes before you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor forsake you.” – Deuteronomy 31:8
This was the verse I repeated over and over again as my husband of 32 years and I drove to MD Anderson in Houston for six weeks of radiation for an inoperable cancerous tumor. He had endured 7 months of four different chemo combinations, each more devastating and debilitating than the last. True to my husband’s style, we decided to make a mini vacation of the trip and went by way on New Orleans. “When life gives you lemons….” As we lived and worshipped in Houston, God provided us with encouragement and support from our family, friends, and the new friends we met there. After the radiation, life became an uphill struggle; with seizures, weight loss, and finally inability to support his once strong 6’2” frame.
My husband only cried in front of me three times and then, for only a brief moment. He rarely complained and never gave up his fight to survive. The athlete in him would not admit defeat. As I blogged about our daily lives, people often asked me how I could be so strong and enjoy each day, how I continued to teach and function. Clearly, it was the LORD going before us and wrapping us in His arms of love. I cannot make it through a Hallmark commercial without crying, but this, the most devastating event of our lives, was strengthening our faith! As the song so beautifully says, “Never once, did we ever walk alone, never once did You leave us on our own.” With strength, dignity, and a grateful heart to the LORD for our three beautiful children and a marriage truly made in Heaven, my husband provided yet another lesson for our family in the amazing, overwhelming peace and strength that can only come from a loving and faithful God.
On May 12, 2012, my sweet baby left us for a moment in time, to spend eternity with the One who gave him life on earth and now, in Heaven. The Lord continues to be with us, leading and guiding our steps, soothing our pain, and allowing us to live life to the fullest and with His joy. He has not failed us, nor has he forsaken us, just as He promised.
To God be the glory forever and ever.
