Stepping Out of the Boat

It seems easy to run from, ignore or just be distracted from the Holy Spirit’s leading in our everyday lives. We may feel that tug of conviction, that push to act in a given situation, but are quickly distracted by our cell phone ringing or the kid’s need for attention. But when you are on mission, especially in a foreign context you are left with nothing of your own to rely on. You face a number of obstacles that leave you realizing you aren’t going to make it without the help of the Holy Spirit. That’s when God takes over and leads you to a place of dependence that you’ve not known before. You can’t hide from your feelings as you find yourself in unfamiliar territory physically, emotionally and spiritually.

What a blessing to know that God wants us to be a part of His plan to bring all peoples to Himself! Thankfully, He also wants to equip us to do the work and in turn use us to equip others. It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists and some to be pastors and teachers to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Ephesians 4:11-13

Before You Pack Your Bags, Prepare Your Heart! This 3-week Bible study will cover many Scriptures and cultivate an attitude of humility and servanthood that is crucial to any short-term project. It is vital to be about God’s plan and not our own. Short-term mission teams can be very detrimental to field strategy if they go with their own agenda.

You will interact with others through experiential exercises as we cover topics such as worldview, strategy, culture shock, prayerwalking, logistical and practical preparation and sharing your testimony. These will help to prepare you for unknown environments so that you can focus on God’s plan and not the circumstances that surround you.

God’s desire is that He be glorified and worshiped among all peoples of the world and for the body of Christ to participate in this (Matthew 28:19-20). Joy and fulfillment come when Believers use the gifts and talents that He has given them to serve. It’s awesome to see people step ‘out of the boat’ (Matthew 14:25-32) and see that they can’t do what God has called them to do, only to realize that they don’t have to. He will do it through them! What a catalyst for a deeper walk with the Lord and seeing His Kingdom come, on earth as it is in Heaven. Missions is discipleship!
